NFSUG2 Adjusted Lap Count

Adjusted Lap Count
'Adjusted Lap Count' is a mod for Need for Speed: Underground 2 that tweaks the number of laps in Circuit, Drift, StreetX, and URL races. Its goal is to eliminate unnecessary laps that make the experience tedious, while adding laps when a race feels too short or underwhelming. It's not just about removing laps like other mods.
Adjustment Criteria
Vehicles used for testing
I used the lowest-performing car available at each stage, fully upgraded to the maximum allowed at the start of that stage, with no tuning changes and no body kits (except for URL races, where visual upgrades were maxed out):
- Stages 1–2: Peugeot 206
- Stage 3: Hyundai Tiburon GT V6
- Stage 4: Volkswagen Golf GTI
- Stage 5: Mitsubishi 3000GT
Lap logic per race
Based on an overall lap time average of 1:07 and an ideal race duration of 3 laps (about 3 minutes and 21 seconds), the following rules were applied:
- If a lap takes less than 55 seconds → 4 laps
- If it takes between 55 seconds and 1 minute 20 seconds → 3 laps
- If it takes over 1 minute 20 seconds → 2 laps
Maximum limit: 4 laps
No race ever gets more than 4 laps. This prevents monotony and avoids a bug where, if a race has more than 4 laps, AI opponents get an odd speed boost — which can cause you to lose even if you're racing perfectly. This issue was already present in Underground 1 and still persists in UG2.
Quick calculations
Assuming the average lap time across all races is 67 seconds:
Original Version (542 laps):
(542 × 67) / 3600 = 10.09 hours (10 hours and 5 minutes)
Modified Version (531 laps):
(531 × 67) / 3600 = 9.88 hours (9 hours and 53 minutes)

@EddieEastsiderz Honestly, I’m not sure how to do that yet. It looks like it requires more advanced modding skills.

Also worth noting that UG2 balance is terrible and skews towards earlier, lighter cars. You're better off testing with, like, a Corsa in every stage.

I think I could try my own iteration for that career mod I was doing.
